I write how I write

I have a particular voice when writing. I have used em dashes and phrases like "not just x, but y" for longer than AI has been around, and I refuse to change the way I write and speak for the sole purpose of avoiding AI accusations. If you see common AI-isms in my scripts, it's because I, as a human, decided that they were effective literary tools to communicate my point.

That said, how can you trust how we do or don't use AI?

AI vs ML

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) mean different things.

  • AI doesn't really mean anything, it's mostly a marketing term
  • ML means using a neural network to "teach" a program pattern recognition. Machine learning can result in that thing being way better at pattern recognition than humans – think screening for skin cancer

For the sake of clarity, I will generally use "AI" to refer to "generative AI" such as LLMs or image/video generators. Things like background removal, "magic mask" tools, or noise suppression tools would be categorized as ML.

The policy

Simply put, we subscribe to the Hank Green AI policy

  1. No portion of any script will be written, edited, or outlined by an LLM.
  2. The thesis of a video will always originate with a human.
  3. No image or music in a video will be generated by AI. If something is accidentally included, best efforts will be made to remove it.

This policy may evolve over time.
